Some Typical King Penguin Facts

Penguins are a grea species of birds that are unique and interesting in their own right. Many people already know that penguins are flightless birds that come in many shapes, sizes and colors.

One of the most well known of all king penguin facts is that they happen to be the second largest of all the types of penguins, the only type of penguin that is larger than them are emperor penguins.

Similar to other penguins, their bodies are extremely torpedo like and made so to be perfect for swimming. Along with flat wings and durable flippers they are able to quickly scoot through the water in an efficient manner.

Where their size is concerned, typically the males are just a little bit larger than the females. Their colors, however, are for the most part the same.

King penguins have a belly that is predominantly white and gradually turns to an orange color as it reaches to the birds breast. Their ears have patches of bright orange and their long bills of black with the lower part being quite pink or orange itself.

When they are new born, the orange areas of the bird will be more yellow and the tips of their black feathers are typically gray. Chicks are also covered with a brown-gray downy color of feathers that molt into a wool like coat by the time they are around a year old. It isn’t until they are nearly two years that they reach their adult coloring.
